What’s Bellotti’s Deal?

December 20th, 2007

Mike Bellotti has confirmed talking to UCLA about their vacant coaching position. When Rob Moseley asked him the UCLA job, Bellotti brushed if off, saying: “I’m just working on what we’re doing here.” The question(s) is: Why doesn’t he nip this in the bud right off the bat?Does that worry you as a Duck fan?Does that excite you as a Bruin fan?Is he looking for financial leverage?Does he really want to leave? What’s your take?

Honestly, I am not worried about Bellotti leaving. Bellotti is proven over time that he is only as good as his assistant coaches and I would have no problems turning over the keys to the kingdom to Chip Kelly if Bellotti were to leave. The only negative to Bellotti were to leave is the effect it would have on recruiting this year. If Chip Kelly became the head coach, I think that problem would be solved.

I hope he does go, Chip Kelly for head coach!

next year is do or die for Bellotti. I can’t really take another year of not meeting expectations with Bellotti. Hopefully he’ll take Allioti with him.

I’ve always been a Bellotti backer - perhaps partly because I recall my dad reading the paper when I was a kid and telling me about the hire (and how the new DC was also named Nick) and he’s been the guy for as long as I can remember. But his record in November is really troubling. I don’t want to see him go, and frankly, at least for me, it’d weird to start over with somebody else. I like the stability he’s built here (Dean of the Pac-10). But most of all, I think I agree with Joe, next year IS do-or-die. He theoretically could have the tools to succeed in the conference. If Booty was gone and USC had to season a new QB, I could see the Ducks winning the conference (also assuming either Nate Costa is who everybody thinks he is and recovers well from surgery, or that this new 4-star QB is dynamite, which frankly in the Pac-10, I doubt). But that is too much to ask. If we do swoon in November after a hot start, AGAIN, no matter the reason… Why not see what somebody else can do? I’d miss the guy, but I like Petersen, and it’d be cool to have a basketball and football coach that are both products of the university they serve. Stick around this year Bellotti, I have faith in you, but WIN GAMES THIS NOVEMBER! I can’t take this year in and year out!

Oops, I guess Petersen went to UC Davis, not Oregon. It’s hard for me to keep track of all the assistants. It is an interesting coincidence though that both he and Bellotti played at the same school.

One other thing (while I’m on my soapbox): give Aliotti a break. He did pretty good this year, didn’t he? He’s not on the hot-seat. He may not be the most consistent, but the ceiling is pretty high for him, and I think with multiple good recruiting classes, he’ll have the tools to make some of you happy.

Either way, next year will be very interesting, and if we finish below the Beavers again, we need to shake things up.

Good riddance. He should have been gone 4-5 years ago in my opinion.

Does this hurt recruiting? If he goes, can we snag a big name coach? Is Kelly really ready to be a head coach? Will the new coach run the spread or do we start all over? So many questions…

Really J? REALLY? He should have been gone in 2002? The year after we had one loss? He should’ve been gone THEN? You people make ABSOLUTELY no sense sometimes (often).
