Who Should Start? Roper or Kempt?

December 3rd, 2007

Did Roper win the job on the field Saturday or should they go back to Kempt? You play head coach, who should start in the Sun Bowl? Why?

Kempt. Bellotti says he outperformed Roper in practice, he started the OSU game. He should start. No brainer.

I believe Bellotti also said you never really now how a QB is going to perform until you put him on the field. So that being said I think it’s Roper till Springball. He was more than adequate.

Plus Kempt looks like a twig about to be snapped in half out there. His arm doesn’t seem nearly as strong as Roper’s.

The points you score in practice don’t get applied to the actual games.

Roper was outstanding. Two passing TD’s and one rushing. The interception was not his fault and had hit the receiver on the numbers. A number of the incompletions were due to him making good decisions in play-action and throwing the ball out of bounds.

They would have to be insane to start Kempt, who has yet to score a touchdown in regulation, over Roper. I’d take it a step further and say that Roper should start over Costa next year until he shows evidence that he can’t maintain the progress he has made.

    Roper. Without question.
He got it done when others couldn’t.
Plus, when he did the double pump fake - he reminded me of someone I used to know…

  5. Tyson Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 8:26 am

Roper. He ran the spread offense well. He reminded me of Dixon on a couple plays, especially on a couple of slight of hand play action plays. Roper was dang good saturday. He didn’t look like a redshirt freshmen out there. Roper has the same kind of touch on his pass that Dixon has as well. Kempt looks like he’s forcing everything. Roper just let the game come to him. Big difference. No question! Roper.

  6. Michael H. Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 9:50 am

Roper. He actually managed to generate some offense when he was on the field. Regardless of getting outplayed in practice by Kempt, he managed to put points on the board and that counts for a lot.

Kempt may have run the system in HS, but it seems clear to me that he doesn’t have the speed at the college level to make the option run really effective. So, given that and Roper’s solid performance throwing the football, its an easy choice.

  7. Bruce Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 9:53 am

Let me evaluate them in practice the next 4 weeks and then I’ll decide.

  8. Dee Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 10:11 am

Roper without question. Kempt had several chances against UCLA and OSU, and hasn’t done anything to grab the job. Roper played a very competent, efficient game on Saturday and clearly won over his teammates, and it would be ludicrous to halt that momentum right now.

  9. BobbyDuck Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 10:34 am

Kempt should transfer to a smaller school. I’m sorry, there is a reason(s) he was offered only by Idaho and Portland State besides our taking him as a third optionat QB: too small, too weak, too slow and he can’t throw. You saw it. He’s played in two games and was hurt in both and could not move the team. Enough said.

  10. admin Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 11:29 am

Prediction: Kempt will be playing more baseball than footall for UO.

  11. Jake Taylor Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 12:26 pm

Hands down Roper. Especially with Kempt’s poor attitude.

  12. Ducknation Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 1:24 pm

ROPER. Jeez, I didn’t think anyone could look more confused and terrified than Leaf…but say hello to Cody Kempt. Practice success does not automatically translate into game success. Pressure affects people in different ways. Roper clearly handles the pressure better than Kempt, especially considering that he’s getting less reps as the backup. ROPER, ROPER, ROPER.

  13. Dirk Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 1:28 pm

It should be Roper and it shouldn’t even be a discussion.

Roper showed far more composure, ability, and poise under pressure than Kempt showed….Actually Kempt really showed me nothing.

Why Bellotti keeps throwing his name out there is beyond me. Favoritism?

Kempt reminds me of the many “Practice all stars” I’ve seen in football over my life time. They look great in practice when they know whats coming, and they are in their comfort zone. But put them up in front of stiff competition on game day and they freeze up like a deer in the headlights.

Roper has a very fluid throwing motion and actually ran the read option keeper very nicely during the civil war game. Kempt has a long throwing motion, and seems to struggle to get much on the throw.

  14. Chris Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 1:32 pm

This isn’t even a question. Roper should start because Kempt has shown no promise on the field, while Roper was atleast adequate against OSU. Cody Kempt is about as useful as the over-hyped, waste of space Brady Leaf! Roper in a landslide!!!

  15. CloneDixonPlease Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 1:56 pm

Hand’s down it’s Roper! Zero points in 5 quarters until this kid comes into the Civil War. the fans already love him just for the simple fact of over achieving. The only reason Bellotti brings him up is to keep the competition in practice that much more intense. Nothing is a given, everything has to be earned day to day. Good coaching IMO. That said Roper better start the SunBowl Mike

  16. CloneDixonPlease Says:

    brings Kempt up that is

  17. Penjamin' Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Roper looks a lot like Dixon. He should get the first go at the Bowl.

  18. kmilk Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

Kempt hasn’t had a game time performance like Roper. Roper at least put up some points. I can’t say the same for Kempt during the UCLA game. Roper struggled as well but rebounded during the OSU game. I also think that the offense responded to Roper a little better after they saw that he could get the ball rolling.

  19. cn Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

what about andre crenshaw? a spread option offense is dead without the option. put andre at QB and give M.Lewis a chance at hback along with stewart.

  20. Other Mike Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

    Roper has earned it.

He didn’t just perform like a veteran quarterback… he came into an intense game as a redshirt freshman, with almost zero game experience and no starts, and not even expected to play in that game, and then he performed like a veteran.

Kempt may or may not be a good quarterback, but one of these men has proved himself, and the other has not. I can’t wait to see him after he’s had a few weeks of practicing as the #1 QB.

  21. DuckHH Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

bellotti’s lost his mind if he even considers Kempt. I’m sure he has talent, he just can’t take a hit. Roper proved himself Saturday - future looks bright.

  22. Mike Stacker Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

I THINK THEY BOTH SMELL LIKE POO POO. I WOULDN’T EVEN PLAY OFFENSE, PUNT EVERY TIME ON 1ST DOWN. EL PASO IS GOING TO SMELL LIKE GREEN POO POO.

  23. James Dobsonburiesteninton Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

I THINK THAT ROPER IS UGLY AND SOUTHERN.

  24. Daniel Leotard Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

    “ROPER LOOKS ALOT LIKE DIXON.”

    ARE YOU HIGH?

ROPER WOULDN’T START AT SOUTH WEST CENTRAL IDAHO STATE.

KEMPT WOLDN’T START FOR MOST HIGH SCHOOLS IN CALI.

WE ARE SHITTIN WITHOUT TOILET PAPER.

    BETTER GET SOME GOOD RECRUITS….

  25. littlduckies Says:

    December 4th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

Is that Daniel Leo Tard? Thought so…

  26. keith Says:

    December 5th, 2007 at 1:49 pm

Kempt is the worst quarterback I have ever seen step onto the field in an Oregon Uniform regardless of age. Probably the worst in division 1 history if that is possible.

    No doubt, ROPER!!!

I sure hope we have a great recruit on the way or Roper grows into that gangly body.

  27. surfduck Says:

    December 5th, 2007 at 2:17 pm

Roper should start based on the touch he showed on the TD pass when he came in cold. He had a nice run and played steady.

On the other hand if Kemp is trying to imitate Dixon he is doing a great job, remember Dixon went in when Klemens went down in Arizona. Dixon promptly went out with a concusion because he didn’t slide. Dixon looked shakey not only the rest of that year but also in 2007.

Let’s give Roper and Kemp some time to mature and take snaps before we bury them.

Just a small observation Dixon and Klemens went down in almost exactly the same both running east on a “keeper” at UA.

  28. Treston Says:

    December 5th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

The starter should be the guy who wins it in practice. To my knowledge not many of us fans are allowed to view much of that, so how can we comment on it. We really haven’t seen much of Kempt or Leaf for that matter, because they keep getting injured. Like Bellotti said on his show about Roper not handling the snaps, “how do you yell at the kid? He’s the only quarterback we have left!”
I think I’ll leave that decision up to Bellotti and Kelly.

  29. Taylor Says:

    December 5th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

Roper hands down. There should be no debate what so ever. Roper is a better passer then kempt, made smart decisions and played really well against benjamin the beaver on saturday. If Roper does not start in El paso i will be heated,Not starting Roper will send the message that we came to the bowl game to have fun and not win. Roper is honestly better then Leaf in My opinion. Let Roper start and have him and Costa battle for the starting NOD next fall.

  30. david reeve Says:

    December 6th, 2007 at 11:51 am

roper all the way, kempt looks scarred to get hit,
kempt does not throw the ball with any heat, at least roper puts his leg in the throw. when kempt throws it flutters. so what if kempt does look good at pratice i knew alot of guys who looked great at pratice but looked like crap in games and i knew guys who looked like crap in practice but looked good in games..

i think roper should play the whole game let him get his confiediecne going. i like the two q-b system but not the way oregon does it. see who is hot then put them in there.

  31. Joe Says:

    December 6th, 2007 at 4:27 pm

Roper should be the starter, end of story. Kempt has shown nothing this year, not meaning he isn’t a good and effective QB. This was tough on everyone; who would have though the biggest injury would possibly be Costa going down in practice? Look, we got beat but, unlike last year, we aren’t fading because of being lazy or lax. We are just so beat up it is not even funny. Of course, by funny I mean us beating Grothe and Selvie in the Sun Bowl. God, El Paso is like our home away from home.

  32. BigDuck (Tim) Says:

    December 6th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

I think Roper showed a little better decision making, with reps with the first string his fakes could get Dixon like… Ok, sorry ! He did have some good fakes and with a month with Kelly he could get pretty good…

  33. Oregon’s Quarterback Question Says:

    February 20th, 2008 at 6:12 pm

[...] There’s been much debate over who will be QB-1 at the University of Oregon in the Fall of 2008. The question first arose back in early December of 2007 - at that time it was: Who should start, Kempt or Roper? [...]
