Pacman, here, in the hizzy [Link].
Over the last couple of days of great weather, Ryan and I have been talking about the curious lack of columns by a one Mr. John Canzano of The Oregonian [Link] concerning Oregon basketball.

The only known photo in existence of John Canzano and Ernie.
Don’t get me wrong. Considering Lil’ John’s past columns regarding Oregon basketball, we’re not necessarily looking forward to anymore from him in the future. We’ve just been a bit perplexed as to their absence.

Kool-Aid John, do you like writing about University of Oregon athletics?
Well, speak of the Devil. His ears must have been burning because he’s made an appearance.
Sort of.
Yesterday, Canzano wrote a column about basketball that referenced the University of Oregon, but it was not about University of Oregon basketball [Link]. In his column, Canzano declares that Trailblazer forward Darius Miles’ most productive days are behind him. I’m not going to pretend that I have full knowledge of all the baggage these two bring to the table, but I think it might put Britney Spears to shame [Link]. But what wouldn’t put Britney Spears to shame is Darius Miles patronizing gentlemen’s clubs, according to Canzano.
[Don't Shoot The Messenger DSN Disclaimer: The information that follow is not a secret. Even though The Oregonian considers DSN a competitor to the point that they blackballed us from advertising with them, they have quite a few readers. Those readers, in addition to Ducks and Beavers fans, are all over this topic in the comments and forum sections of numerous websites.]
However, Canzano’s declaration that Miles’ career is over is not what’s getting the attention. Well, it seems that there was a singular Double-D who was in attendance at this particular strip club as a part of Miles’ entourage.
Miles and the members of his entourage, which included former Oregon Ducks quarterback Dennis Dixon, spent the night moving between three stages, removing the bands and tossing the stacks in the air, sending a shower of loose bills fluttering down on the dancers.

Lil’ John Canzano made it rain. And it was a piddle. [Link]
Now, I’m not going to moralize on the nature of strip clubs. Although, I will say that I do not frequent those establishments and I would encourage others to do the same. I will also say that I don’t think Dennis Dixon is making the same kind of smart decisions off the field that he made on the field.
But here’s what I am going to moralize on: Mr. Canzano, how is that relevant to your column?
The bottomline is that it’s not. The only point that information served was to add a little pop (in the face of the U of O) to a column that otherwise lacked sizzle. I’m not much of a Blazers fan, but I do know that Darius Miles does not have much of a future in the NBA. Tell me something I didn’t know. Even though I did not know that about Dennis Dixon, would that column have been any different if that detail had been edited out? I don’t think so.
“Can’t rain all the time…” is one of my favorite lines from The Crow [Link]. So, in these days of great Oregon weather, I’ve got one question: Scarecrow, are you writing for The Oregonian or TMZ.com?

Crapzano Bites!!!
His articles suck and so does the paper… I just love the Californians coming to Oregon and telling us ‘HOW’ things should be done…
He’s a dead beat trying to sell more papers, stiring the pot…
I’d love to find out where he lives and Toilet paper and egg his house… lol

This is an intriguing argument. But, in light of the recent “Good News & Ba-a-a-d New for OSU” post, I don’t think this arguement holds much clout.
Let’s be honest, an article about a rival school doing research on gay sheep is hilarious…can’t blame you for clowning the Beav’s about that.
But…posting such an article on this blog (which is dedecated to sports info.) is no different than Canzano’s mention of DD’s character flaws.

The OSU post is more in jest. It’s just a funny coincidence. If Tari Tan was studying at any other school, it wouldn’t be quite as amusing.
As far as Canzano and DD are concerned, that entry was more about Canzano’s character flaw than DD’s. Even though I do not condone strip clubs, DD is young and will mature.
To borrow a phrase from Mike Gundy, Canzano’s a man. And dropping DD’s name in the column was an unnecessary gratuitous shot across the DD’s bow and at the U of O.
I didn’t find anything about that remotely funny.

Jay-
Once again…I can’t argue the humerous nature of the gay sheep story. I’m a Beaver fan…and I think it’s funny!
But… the post goes on to rehash the fact that several Beaver football players had been caught stealing said gay sheep. That extra information might also be construed as “an unnecessary gratuitous shot”.
Let me be clear, Canzano is an idiot. But dropping DD’s name in the article is his choice.
If DD is going to hang out with Miles (whose reputation garners a lot of attention), he (and Duck fans) should accept the consequences.

Thanks for the comments and exchange.
Like I said before, I think it’s an amusing coincidence about the sheep situation at OSU. And that’s about all it is.
As far as Canzano is concerned, my point was that I did not see any reason (other than, “Hey, guess who else was there!”) in dropping DD’s name. I don’t think it added a single thing to the piece.
When it comes to accepting responsibility, that’s pretty much up to DD himself. I don’t think his actions at this point have much to do with the U of O (or their fans). But I don’t think Canzano sees it that way.
I think his entire point in involving DD was to jab the U of O in the ribs. And that’s the difference.
The OSU story was a friendly poke in the ribs. Canzano took a kidney shot.
Brad, here’s the frustrating thing about Canzano. And I’ve had several media types tell me this is the case. No one know where this guy is coming from. It seems that the best thing that can be said about him is that he is consistently inconsistent. And that makes it difficult for people (fans) to connect with him.
Thanks again.

Canzano is nothing more than an ambulance chaser of a “journalist”, trying to drum up drama about the Ducks, Beavers or Blazers whenever and whereever he can. I emailed him about 4 years ago when I lived up in Portland and told him just that, and told him I would never read one of his articles again. I haven’t. And I still won’t. I’d rather sit and look at my foot for 10 minutes than read one of his “columns”. Garbage. Nothing more.

And why is Canzano berating DD or Miles for visiting the same boob bar that he was obviously in? Wonder who drove Canzano home after he had his drinks?

Seamusduck,
CAN-zano probably got a tip from a “reliable source”, but if he was there it was probably with Steve Duin that other “crewsaider” for the Cat-Litter-liner…er, Beavergonian.
Let’s hope Duin didn’t drive as a “reliable source” says he got thrown off a south bound Amtrak train
in Tacoma last summer after having “a few too many beers” at a Mariners’ game.

Just got off the phone with someone who is a parent and he had an interesting take on Canzano dropping DD’s name in his column. This person suggested that maybe Canzano did DD a favor. Hanging out in strip clubs with Darius Miles is not a good sign of things to come. So, perhaps Canzano did DD a favor by calling attention to this behavior. And maybe the attention DD receives from this might make him reconsider his actions in the future.
That’s a good thought from a parent.
