Oregon’s Quarterback Question

February 20th, 2008

There’s been much debate over who will be QB-1 at the University of Oregon in the Fall of 2008. The question first arose back in early December of 2007 - at that time it was: Who should start, Kempt or Roper?

The debate continues in cyber-places such as Rob Moseley’s blog, where over 86 comments have been posted about Moseley’s quarterback preview since yesterday morning.

Did I mention that it’s February? The heart of basketball season? Selection Sunday is less than four weeks away and the dominant e-discussions revolve around football. It’s true, there are two seasons in football, as Colin Cowheard says: Football Season and waiting for football season.

So, we’ll join the discussion. Or at least throw something more out there to discuss.

Below is a breakdown of starting (or in some cases, the primarily-used) quarterbacks at Oregon since 1990, and how the Ducks have fared with a senior quarterback or with an underclassman at the helm.

Obviously this season the Ducks are looking at starting a (rs) sophomore or freshman QB. It will be interesting to see how they compare with the underclassmen of the past.

I am actually surprised that sophomores have been slightly better than juniors, but those were years of strong running games.

1999 -Droughns 1200+ on the ground
2003-Whitehead only 700+ but the other senior receivers (Parker) picked up a lot of the load for a young Clemens

This breakdown is worthless! Why only since 1990? What sense does that make? Where are the Musgrave FR/SO/JR years? Also, there are too many variables involved to relate the performance of the class to the class of the quarterback. It’s a no-brainer to surmise that a senior quarterback WHO IS A VETERAN OF THE SYSTEM will be more effective. A couple of these seniors had little prior experience. This is as ridiculous as trying to guess what’s going on in Pryor’s head. I’d be more interested in the stats of quarterbacks in relation to their class.

I am a little surprised Bellotti didn’t go after a JC QB this year. thanks for the charts, Wow, that ‘91 season was rough. Was that the 5 QB season?

I have been a Roper fan since he signs. Did well in the bowl.

    SJ (in particular) –

Regardless of whether or not you think the information is “worthless” or not — it does give facts, winning percentages, and a visual context (several in fact) outline of the QB’s from 1990 on, and the overall breakdown in winning percentages per class. Sure, there are MANY MANY variables. But come on SJ, don’t shoot the messengers for at least providing you, the fan, with statistics. . .if the chart is “absolutely worthless” — why in the world be concerned with going back BEFORE 1990 if the info is irrelevent?

Be a support, not a “Canzano”. We’re all in this together.

In life, the best predictor of the f uture is the past so it is relevant. It may not be 100% predictor but life and sports and everything is cyclical. Besides College Football unlike pro football is a quarterback league and historically throughou division 1 senior quarterbacks win

Just a comment. Jason Fife was a Junior in 2002. He was a senior in 2003 when Clemens started his string.
