UPDATE: Some visitors are wondering what is the point of “The Return of Sea Bass”. I might be a little late with an explanation, but I think I have one. And it’s not that bad. Take a look at the comments below for more. But the bottom line is that this event could become a fundraise for a charitable or non-profit organization. And Josh just might do it. But there would be a lot of work to do. And it’s going to take some time, support, and help. Show your support and sign the online petition.
Jay, here.
Last Friday, I got a call from Justin Myers, the Sports Idol on Eugene’s ESPN Radio 1320 “The Score”. I thought, “This is great! Justin wants me to come on his show next week.” Immediately, I tried to anticipate what Justin would want to talk about with me. Ducks’ basketball? Spring football? The Oscars? Whatever he wanted to talk about, I knew I needed to be prepared.
Well, I wasn’t prepared for the real reason he was calling: he wanted to talk Sea Bass.
I’ll let Justin show and tell.

The Sports Idol Justin Myers at the 1997 Sea Bass appearance in Roseburg.

Hello Duck Fans!
I am writing this letter to officially throw my support behind Joe Giansante and his campaign to bring “Sea Bass” back to the squared circle for one night only. As you can see, I was a fan of Sea Bass from day one. This picture is from the Douglas County Fairgrounds (I am the one in the blue hat) in 1997 (Oh, the good ol’ days!) when Sea Bass made his Northwest tour. I don’t know if I would be the man I am today if not for the lessons of Sea Bass.
Josh, your fans need you for one night only!
Please join the campaign. We must have Sea Bass back, if only for one night.

Justin, it looks like it’s a campaign now. Head on over to ‘Sea Bass Should Return For One Night Only’ and sign the online petition calling for the return of Sea Bass.

Hasn’t this joke run its course already? Its starting to smell like a inside joke that nobody “gets” and it wasn’t that funny to begin with.

Gang Green -
Thanks for the comment.
Actually, there is a point. And your comments give me the opportunity to explain it in context.
Is this an inside joke? Yes and no. If you have no idea as to what the Sea Bass thing was about, it’s difficult to explain. It’s simply a piece of Oregon football lore.
Was it funny? Sea Bass might not have been funny, but I think Josh and his stories are funny.
So, what’s the point? Here’s the point: what if this “Return of Sea Bass” could be turned into a charitable event?
If Josh actually did this, people would go. And it would reach a wider audience than a typical professional wrestling event. And if people went, someone, or some organization, could turn this into a real show that could do some good.
That’s kind of the point. Plus, it’s a bit of a breather between basketball, football, and recruiting.
Does that make sense?

Jay,
If it’s a charitable event - then why not say so in the first place? Call it out loud and clear. This is something that people would get behind. Otherwise, I agree with the first poster - I didn’t get the joke either.

Thanks for joining the conversation.
Why didn’t I say that to begin with? Because I just thought about it a few minutes ago to justify all of the Sea Bass entries?
Actually, there are a couple of reasons for not saying so at the very beginning. It’s kind of like in a committee meeting, you don’t want to be the one to bring up an idea because the job of making that idea happen will fall on you. And I wasn’t sure about all the players involved.
However, I did get an email from Josh saying that he’s 99% against it, except for the possibility as a fundraising event for charity.
I’m a bit of planner. So, I was reluctant to just toss an idea out there. But I guess it has to start somewhere.
Jason, if this was an event for charity, would you go?

Jay,
Thanks for the response. You know, I probably wouldn’t attend a wrestling event. It’s not really my cup of tea. Thanks for asking though.
I would be interested in a former Duck talent show or something to that regard for charity. Wrestling just doesn’t speak to me and I can’t say I even know anyone who’s into it.

WOW - from the looks of that pic, Joe G is no longer superfan- The sports idol is NOW the superfan. The signs were bad enough but that little twinkle in your eye puts you over the top.
