March 25th, 2008

Jay, here.

Here’s the commercial from Save Oregon Wrestling that was pulled from ESPN.

For more information about SOW or their continuing efforts, go to saveoregonwrestling.com.

After almost 70 comments on the original post, I don’t why I’m posing these questions. But I feel compelled to.

Wrestling fans, what do you think?

Non-wrestling fans, what do you think?

THE CONVERSATION

  1. Hank Hosfield Says:

    March 25th, 2008 at 2:37 pm

USA Wrestling graciously volunteered to produce this commercial for us. We gave them a script, storyboard and some digital photos and turned them loose with zero production budget and a tight deadline. They tried to make it work, but as it turns out, making commercials are really not their specialty. When I saw the initial edit I demanded many changes. They greatly disregarded my creative direction. They also were unable to grant my request to see the spot before it was sent to ESPN. I didn’t see it until Monday, long after ESPN had rejected it. My initial reaction upon seeing the finished spot was relief that ESPN had refused to run it. It appears here at the request of others, and against my recommendation that it instead be dropped down a volcano.
The production quality of this spot had nothing to do with ESPN’s refusal to air it. The ban is something else entirely to do with alleged network policy that their salesman is taking the blame for not paying closer attention. It’s all very regrettable, and a needless sum loss of time, money and effort for SOW.

    Hank -

As they say, you can have it fast, good, and cheap. But you have to pick two out of the three.

Fast & Good = Not Cheap
Good & Cheap = Not Fast
Cheap & Fast = Not Good

Amateur quality at best and definitely not at the level to air on national television.

Plus it was inappropriate to attack Mr. Knight for his generosity.

  4. Hank Hosfield Says:

    March 25th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

    Amatuerish, Jake? Guilty.

Attack on Mr. Knight? No way. The reference to his $100 million donation is no indictment of his generosity, but rather a statement about the good fortunes of the UO athletic department. However, that text was supposed to be removed and a pan across the beauty shot of Autzen was supposed to stand on its own. It was one of many changes that didn’t happen. But thanks for sticking up for the billionaire. He needs all the support he can get.

That commercial would have been completely ineffective. I was expecting a whole lot better when I heard there was a commercial being considered to air during the NCAA’s. I’m glad ESPN decided to save us the embarrassment. Everything from the angry sounding voice over to the poor imaging made it pretty tacky. Thanks ESPN.
BTW….I’ll probably see just as many baseball games as I have wrestling matches which is zero. So, I think that makes me fairly unbiased.

wrestling sucks, go baseball and competitive cheerleading!!!!!

With a name like “True DuckFan” I would think you would support all Ducks. You have obviously misunderstood the mission of Save Oregon Wrestling. We have nothing against the addition of baseball and competitive cheer, we just want to save our sport.

  8. David C. Nelson, College Station, Texas Says:

    March 27th, 2008 at 7:36 am

We are all amateurs at trying to save a sport slated for elimination. The only pros in this game are the college athletic directors, who in their summer conventions attend seminars on how to cut a sport.

Nobody in the S.O.W. campaign is delighted with the commercial.

We’ve made our share of mistakes, but we’re the David in this latter-day struggle against a Goliath of college athletics. David didn’t have an account with J. Walter Thompson, and if he had tried to advertise, he message probably would have sucked.

But despite our klutzy nature, we’ve raised $2.8 million and achieved nationwide publicity with the Kesey bus demonstration. Look for us to continue to struggle and stumble at times, but don’t ever expect us to give up.

The typical kind of responses I expected from the outside people. People that are easily blinded by the all mighty dollar that Uncle Phil throws at them when told what to say or do.

  10. Richard Says:

    April 8th, 2008 at 1:18 pm

As I’ve been reading through some of the old comments on the UO wrestling cut subject, I’ve noticed a certain trend with them all, outside people really don’t understand what wrestling is about.

So, to let you better understand where we are coming from and in order to teach the nay sayers why UO shouldn’t cut the sport, I invite you to the Cadet State Freestyle and Greco Tournament, that will be held at Willamette HS this Sat and Sun. It starts at 10am on Sat and 9am on Sun.

Here you will be able to watch some of OR’s young athletes from all over the state, trying to make the OR National Team.

If you really want to know why UO needs to reconsider keeping wrestling, here’s your chance to watch and learn about our sport. I personally invite Jay or any other to come sit in the stands with my team and I. you’ll even get to watch one of the top young wrestlers in the nation, Zac Brunson of Eugene(yes Eugene has some quality wrestlers) compete.

you bring up a good point. i hope Jay responds and follows through. this would be a great chance for him to see just what we’re talking about.

come on jay, make the trip out to willamette high school and see what all the commotion is about and you can write about it here. you talk about reaching out to the outside fans and convincing them, well here’s your chance to help out.

  12. Jay Says:

I thought I turned the comments off on this post. Ooops. Guess not.

    I kid. Sort of.

Will I be making the trip to Will High this weekend? I don’t know.

Being the semi-good-sport I am, I’ll throw this out: I will think about going to this if someone there can explain it to me.

Please, don’t make me regret this.

I will be more than happy to explain the sport to you while you’re there, as long as you promise to stay for awhile and watch some good matches. Maybe 4hrs out of your day.

You’ll get to meet a lot of new and interesting people, who are not only dedicated to the sport, but great all around people. Heck, you can even ask them why they enjoy the sport so much compared to others. It may surprise you.

You’ll get to see a lot of great match ups and some athleticism you may be missing from watching football and basketball.

You’ll get to see the brotherhood that is wrestling, the camaraderie between wrestlers and coaches.

And best of all, you’ll get witness of the future of OR wrestling as they all try and qualify for the OR National Wrestling Team that will head out in July to the toughest wrestling tournament in the nation, Cadet/Jr Nationals. May even meet a future Olympian.

Starts at 10am on Sat for freestyle and 9am on Sun for Greco-Roman at Willamette HS.

Can’t do four hours. I might be able to do an hour, an hour and a half on Saturday. Got church on Sunday.

    I’ll think about it.
