Jay, here.
I don’t quite know how I stumble upon stuff like this on television.
Well, in this case I do: my wife called my attention to it.
And, in some ways, I wish she had not. And I’m not sure Eugene residents are going to appreciate the attention, either.
Honestly, I don’t know what to say here. So, I’ll let FOX News’ Brit Hume and Dan Springer (with some help from Lane County Commissioner Bobby Green and the Eugene Chamber of Commerce’s David Hauser) take it from here with a story (“Too Politically Correct?”) on Eugene’s unique preparations for the upcoming U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials.
FOX News’ Too Politically Correct?
So, DSN visitors, who’s stereotyping who here?
Is sensitivity training for Eugene residents necessary before the Olympic Trials?
Should FOX News undergo some cultural competency training of their own(Dan, the “Eugene Hotel” is not a hotel.)?
Or am I the only one being overly senstive here?
React and Duckcuss. But, please, do it sensitively.

I like the one gentleman’s comment, “Racism is like a lot of other things, If you don’t look for it, you’re not going to find it here.”
Right On!! He should be doing the sensitivity training.

This is ridiculous. “Well, the town is mostly white, so obviously Eugene’s citizens aren’t capable of handling an influx of African-Americans.” Maybe we should just leave race relations to the pros in places like Mississippi, where white and black populations are more even?

FOX obviously hasn’t spent much time in Eugene Oregon. Eugene is certainly one of the nicest, most welcoming communities I’ve lived.

Yep, the final sentence of the video says it all.
“perhaps an oversensitive solution, looking for a problem”.

Eugene is considered one of the most liberal cities in Oregon…I don’t think that it has anything to with racial prejudice it has more to do with the culture shock because this city is mostly white, but not solely. Eugene is pretty open to anyone and anything they just want to be extra sensitive maybe too sensitive about the matter.

It should be noted that Bobby Green the person behind the training is a republican. So this isn’t the usual crazy liberals going overboard on the political correctness Fox News portrayed it as…
As someone who has called Eugene home most of life, the whole thing is quite odd, and very unnecessary, although EPD could probably use some training in that regard.

Bobby Green is a liberal - one of three public enemy’s that voted for a Lane County county income tax.
I’ve found that liberals are the biggest racists, especially black liberals like Mr. Green, and will take great efforts to keep racial issues to the forefront.
I find his “sensitivity training” for Caucasians to be very offensive and racist - how dare this guy stereotype Caucasians as if we need special training to be nice. I agree with comments above the Eugene is one of the friendliest cities I’ve ever been in - to everyone.
I think if I were a person of color I’d also be offended by Mr. Green because of the inference that my race was some sort of odd-ball group that needed some sort of special attention from those not part of my race.
Mr. Green needs to read the US Constitution - that we are all created equal. Perhaps Mr. Green needs some sensitivity training of his own.

Just the fact that people are trying to justify their “whiteness” and having “privilege” so that they shouldn’t have to undergo “sensitivity training” indicates to people of color that the social oppression is not recognized still by those in the majority and those with the power to continue the racial divide. It may seem far-fetched but comforts/resources such as food, religion, and needs are important and recognizing that people in Eugene do ask and say insensitive comments (even rooted in ignorance and not hate) shows that you don’t understand. And please - just because one black person says it’s not there - doesn’t mean it exists - because it still does.

Wow - what a bunch of racist crap!
I’ve found what people call “insensitive” is usually motivation-by-guilt tactics. For example, It’s wrong that Mayor Kitty and her liberal council members embrace illegal aliens. You would call me “insensitive” and maybe even a racist, but I would call you insensitive to the legal residence of our city and the burden they must bear.
Let’s balance the world out - let’s have sensitivity training for blacks. Teach them how conservative whites try and get their children into private schools via school vouchers, but hateful and racist liberals (black and white) want to continue to force them to go to government indoctrination public schools just so unions can stay alive.
I’m sick of this BS where liberal fools try and use race divisions to promote their lies and their motivation by faux guilt.
You are full of hate dude and you are the only one that needs sensitivity training.

Whatevah - whites can’t get in because society recognizes the historical injustices and are trying to correct a wrong. Tell me JUSTADOG - how does a “little bit” of discrimination feel? This little bit is but a teardrop compared to the racist stuff that has been out upon by the majority community. Sorry you feel so guilty. maybe there’s a good reason. Sorry! Didn’t mean to ruffle your feathers.
