Jay, here.
Cumulus Broadcasting in Eugene is shaking up the lineup on ESPN Radio 1320 “The Score”. Good news for some. Bad news for others.
First, the good news. Congratulations to our friend Steve Tannen. “Sports Talk with Steve Tannen” is returning to the sports talk airwaves next week on ESPN Radio 1320 “The Score”. With the addition of Steve to KSCR’s lineup, they not only have cornered the sports talk radio market, but they have also cornered the market on all local talk radio in the Eugene-Springfield area.
Now for the bad news. You may not know this, but Costco always maintains the same number of products in their stores. So, whenever they add a product, they have to drop a product. Well, with the addition of Steve Tannen, KSCR is dropping Jim Rome from their broadcast store. Clones, Jim Rome is now in the basement. Good night now!
Here’s the press release and new lineup from Cumulus Broadcasting.

“I am thrilled and delighted to be back on the air in Eugene with 1320, The Score” said Steve Tannen. ”…there’s a terrific spirit of sports people and sports attitude inside this building, and I’m excited to be a part of it”.
Jerry Allen, KSCR Program Director and voice of the Oregon Ducks added: “Steve Tannen brings solid sports knowledge, a quirky fun attitude and a great passion for sports. His show will strengthen an already solid station”.

Dumping the quintessential sports talk show (Jim Rome’s The Jungle) and keeping the idiot “Idol?” I like Steve Tannen and hope he succeeds. I dislike “The Sports Idol” with a passion (he sounds like a high school kid in his attitude and his whiney, shouting, Vitale-like delivery) and really, really wish KSCR had dumped him and kept the best sports talk show on our air waves. Stations all over America rearrange their schedules to bring Jim Rome live. What the heck is wrong with this town and radio. First we lose Air America and now we’re relegated to second-rate sports talk programming.

Thank you KSCR.
Justin Myer’s may have his moments but at his worst he’s not nearly as smarmy and annoying as Jim Rome. It’s not even a contest! The whole “Clones” and “Have a take” thing was so annoying. I looked forward to when he had a day off and would have a guest appearance by someone. ANYONE!
Getting Dan Patrick back on KSCR gets them at least one more listener for that time period. I was catching DP Online after his show was hours old. I’ll tune to KSCR Online now and certainly be there for Steve Tannen.
This is all good news for this sports fan!

I agree with Kevin. Rome is the worst display of so called entertainment I can imagine. Even a notch below Air America and Rush Limbaugh. (take your pick)
As for Justin, maybe someday he will reach puberty and his voice will change. He is quite knowledgeable but he rambles on and on as if he needs to fill time. He is reminiscent of a recent beauty queen. Maybe they could do a show together, “Mr and Miss South Carolina”.
That said, at least I can somewhat tolerate Justin. With Rome the channel is changed.

Jim Rome is a required taste. I find it uniquely interesting and am worried that the 3 local shows will be repetitive. Also Jim Rome regularly interviews are coaching staff and players that will definitely be missed.
Were else are you going to hear Jeff “Freaking” Kendell, “were just a bunch of fat kids living the dream.”

Justin, Steve, and George are all friends of DSN. But I don’t think all three of them are fans of the same things in sports.
Here’s my guess on how this all works out and avoids being repetitive. Steve is going to talk more national and regional sports. He’ll talk some Ducks. But probably no more than the news of the day requires. George is going to talk more Ducks than Steve, but with a national perspective. And Justin will probably talk the most about the Ducks, from a local perspective. But I think he’ll mix it up as he usually does with national and regional stories of interest to Duck fans.
That’s just a guess. I’m sure they’ve worked this out to some extent.
Will there be a lot of Ducks talk? Yeah. Will they on occasion talk about some of the same things on the same day? Sure. But that’s only going to be repetitive if they are saying the same thing and you listen to it all. And I don’t think either will be the case.
Rome is an acquired taste. But he’s a West Coast honk. And on occasion, his take on sports will be missed.
But his departure sets up an interesting situation for local sports talk radio. Now, I don’t know the ratings numbers for Rome. I could probably find out fairly easily. But companies tend to not drop programming that is either successful or affordable. So, one or both of those things wasn’t working: either Rome wasn’t getting good ratings or it was too expensive.
If Rome’s departure created a programming vacuum in the Eugene-Springfield area, vacuums tend to get filled fairly quickly. And “The Jim Rome Show” would not be a bad staple for the emergence of a new a sports talk radio station. Heck, it doesn’t have to be sports talk radio. It could be just talk radio.
Toss in a Don Imus with Jim Rome and you might have the start to a local radio station that could get some serious attention.

I am very glad to hear that Steve Tannen is going to be back on the airwaves. I am also glad it is not in the same time slot as the Sports Idol due to the fact that I highly enjoy both programs. Jim Rome got old real quick and I am glad to see him gone. I realize it is an acquired taste but more local radio has a much better taste in my mouth.

Tannen is the Man!!
I’d put his sports knowledge up against anyones. Not only Duck stuff, but the guy could tell you who was the back up 3rd baseman on the 76′ Braves and the 1st pinh hitter off the bench vs. Lefties for the 81′ Mets.
I mean he’s an encyclopedia of sports knowledge and a Great Listen!!!
Congrat’s to Jerry and the station for the new line up. I think it’s great
I’ve listened to Rome on and off over the better part of 7-8 years, basically because he’s the only thing on, and it’s NOT something I’ll miss. It’s hit and miss, I could careless that he’s gone… All the ‘clone’ stuff, ‘good take’, and ‘rack-em’ and whatnot is BORING.
Congrats Mr. Tannen! I look forward to the show.
Followed by the Writers Block and the Idol. What a lineup!!!

The only thing I find annoying with Justin Meyers is when he talks about “American Idol” and not sports. Is there any way to get rid of Mike & Mike? Mike Greenberg is the gayest thing in sports. Rome will be missed, if only for his hilarious takes on the stupid morons in sports.

I really really hate this change. Just dump Dan Patrick. Rome is the main reason i ever cared about 1320. At first i hated Rome, then i realized he is utterly hilarious and why he is considered the best sports radio host. I am going to flood the email of Jerry Allen until i get a response.
