Chambers Ends Affiliation With Oregon Sports Network

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

By Jay Jones, July 31, 2008

As some of you might know, I worked at KEZI and Chambers Productions for a number of years after finishing up at the University of Oregon.  As a part of KEZI and Chambers, I had the privilege of working on a number of University of Oregon-related productions, such as Duck Vision.

Those projects were not only good projects, but they were fun projects.  Some of my fondest memories at Chambers were of working with very talented co-workers, producing some of the best content in collegiate sports (at very late hours - most of the time that was of my own doing).

And Oregon fans won big.

I’ll keep my comments brief here.  But I think the possibility exists that Oregon fans across the state are going to lose in this deal.

And I’ll tell you why: where will Duck fans be able to find University of Oregon programming next year?

Honestly, I don’t know.

My best guess is that ComcastSportsNet will have most, if not all, of Oregon’s programming.  Rebroadcasts.  Coaches shows.  Sports specials.

But I don’t know.  Do you?

And that’s kind of a problem.

But what if you don’t have Comcast?  If you don’t have Comcast and you’re a Duck fan, you’re probably out of luck.

Sure, ABC will pick up a number of Oregon’s games this year.  And there will be a few on FoxSportsNet and Versus (As my wife asked, “What’s Versus?”).  But any additional programming is going to end up on some yet-to-be-announced network.

One of the great things about the OSN and Chambers partnership was that I knew I could count on Chambers affiliates across the state for Oregon sports.  Where there wasn’t a Chambers station, some type of alternative usually existed.

If everything is on Comcast and you don’t get Comcast (and get satellite instead), I don’t think there’s going to be an alternative.

And Duck fans, that’s too bad, and won’t be fun.

But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

So much for brief.

Here’s the press release:

NEW CONTRACT TERMS END CHAMBERS’ AFFILIATION WITH OSN

(Eugene, OR – 7/31/08) Chambers Communications announced today that new contract language just received from IMG Communications for Oregon Sports Network programming has caused Chambers to not renew its affiliation with OSN for locally produced coverage, live games and special interest shows highlighting University of Oregon athletics on Chambers’ television stations KEZI-Eugene, KOHD-Bend, and KDRV-Medford.

“Chambers Communications has a long history of providing viewers throughout Oregon with unprecedented coverage of University of Oregon athletics,” said Scott Chambers, President. “It is clear from the contract language that the University of Oregon, through its partnership with IMG, now has a business model for rights and programming that no longer has room for the local and statewide broadcast television partnership, viewers or advertisers offered by Chambers’ three ABC affiliates throughout the state.”

Recently, Chambers Communications finished its second successful five-year Agreement with OSN. Under the terms, the company’s three ABC Network broadcast stations produced and/or distributed more than 100 hours of University of Oregon athletic programs per year, including live football and basketball games, pre and post game programs, special coaches’ shows and pre and post season specials.

On January 7, 2008, after lengthy negotiations, Chambers Communications received a signed letter of intent from OSN for a new five-year agreement under similar terms of the previous agreements. In February 2008, the University of Oregon negotiated an exclusive sports representation arrangement with IMG, giving the company exclusive rights over University or Oregon sports inventory, including games, television programs, signage, and stadium game programs. Through numerous discussions between Chambers and the University, there was no indication that terms of the signed letter of intent would be significantly changed.

This past Friday, July 25, 2008, approximately four weeks before Oregon’s first football game, Chambers Communications received a contract offer from IMG outlining new terms. Included in the contract were substantially increased rights fees, restrictions on sponsors, significantly reduced company and sponsor benefits and the elimination of Chambers-produced programs featuring University of Oregon Athletics or coaches, except for live games.

“In the best interest of the company and its advertisers, Chambers Communications has no option but to reject the terms of the IMG contract,” said Dana Siebert, Chambers Chief Operating Officer. “Chambers Sports and our three ABC broadcast affiliates throughout Oregon will cease affiliation with the Oregon Sports Network effective July 31, 2008, the expiration date of the current five-year contract.”

Seattle’s Dave “Softy” Mahler: Duck Fans Can Kiss My…

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

By Jay Jones, July 29, 2008

Boys and girls, we’re still over a month away and it’s begun.

On Tuesday, new Morning Sports Page host Gavin Dawson pitch-hit for The Oregonian’s John Canzano and talked to Seattle-area sports talk show host Dave “Softy” Mahler on The Bald Faced Truth.  And “Softy” fired this year’s first shot early, and often.

All I can say is, “Wow.”

Duck fans, this guy hates you. You’re neanderthals. Morons. Drunks. And clowns.

Now, Dave, tell us how you really feel about Duck fans.

Here’s the link to the audio. Gavin’s conversation with “Softy” starts pretty close to the top.

Be Our Friend, Join Our Group On Facebook!

Friday, July 25th, 2008

By Jay Jones, July 25, 2008

Duck fans, we want you to be more than simply visitors to Duck Sports News. We want you to be our friends!

If have a Facebook account and think asking us to be your friend means that our friendship is moving a little too fast, we also have a Duck Sports News.com group you can join.

But, hopefully, we can be both friends and in the same group! Wouldn’t that be cool?

Come on, everybody is doing it!

Here’s my profile on Facebook.

And here’s the Duck Sports News.com group. Through the DSN group, you can ask RW to be your friend, too.

Invite your Facebook friends, as well.  Let’s see how big the DSN group can get.

As a side note, and slightly immature social experiment, I’m going to ask The Oregonian’s John Canzano to be my friend.

I’ll let you know if he quickly responds, or wants to take it slow.

Autzen’s Scoreboard

Friday, July 25th, 2008

It’s funny that Moseley posted some photos today of the scoreboard, as I was driving by this morning and grabbed this shot real quick. Like him, I was unable to get inside the stadium gates, so had to settle for this.

Notice the dude in the upper-left hand corner of the board.

Tuesday’s The Writer’s Block: DSN Talks Song Girl Gate with Scott Wolf

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

By Jay Jones, July 22, 2008

Song Girl Gate is blowing up!

And Oregon is right in the middle of it.

This morning on The Writer’s Block on ESPN Radio 1320 “The Score”, The Register-Guard’s Rob Moseley and I talked to Inside USC’s Scott Wolf about this brahaha of a controversy (starts at around 18:00).

We also talked about the Eugene City Council’s decision to delay on action on vacating the Villard Street Alley property for the new basketball arena (right off the top).

And we talked some magic tricks that make things disappear: a pencil in The Dark Knight, an FCC fine for the “wardrobe malfunction”, sexual assault charges at Iowa, and a prison sentence.

Here’s the link to the audio.

Welch Q&A Archive: Answers To Oregon Sports Trivia

Monday, July 21st, 2008

By Jay Jones, July 21, 2008

Have you ever wondered what all those giant X’s and O’s are in front of the Casanova Center? Or why was the producer of “The Bourne Ultimatum” wearing a “Pre” t-shirt in footage on the DVD extras? Or how far is it from the floor of McArthur Court to the third balcony

Even if you haven’t, inquiring Oregon fans want to know. So, they’ve asked award-winning Register-Guard columnist Bob Welch. And since 2000, he’s been answering local trivia questions every month. But just because his column is in the City/Region section, don’t let that fool you. Bob might not be the Register-Guard’s sports columnist (or a former member of Fleetwood Mac or a former Cy Young Awarding-winning pitcher), but he’s definitely the go-to guy at the Register-Guards for Oregon sports-related trivia.

As of yesterday, all 99 of Bob’s monthly Q&A columns are now available online. After his column on Tuesday, that number will be 100.

More than just local civic trivia questions, Bob’s answered quite a few questions of interest to Duck fans.

Want to know what that sound is after the Ducks score at Autzen? Or why it took a while to see those yellow and white football helmets? Or was that really a UO football game on TV in “Head of State”?

Ask Bob!

Oh, wait. Somebody already has.

All you have to do is search for the answers.

But, really, aren’t we all just searching for answers?

Now you know where to find some.
