Daily News, USC Blogger Obsessed With Oregon Cheerleaders

[Update: Sports Illustrated visitors, welcome to the Ducks Sports News blog!]

USC fans are not real happy with their “Song Girls”. But they seem to really, really like Oregon’s cheerleaders.

The Daily News’ Scott Wolf runs the Inside USC blog, where there has been an ongoing discussion regarding the quality, and qualities, of the USC “Song Girls” (cheerleaders).

Just to confirm USC’s fans’ displeasure, I called my sister, a USC graduate (shameless plug - she will be a guest star on an episode of NBC’s “Life” next season), and asked her about the situation.

“They’re hideous and not blonde enough,” was her response.

This discussion has not always been very “pretty” and recently forced Mr. Wolf’s to make this proclamation:

The topic of the Song Girls seems to have taken on a life of its own in the comments section. With that in mind, if you have a comment, please refrain from negative adjectives about physical appearance, etc., that can easily be avoided while still discussing the subject.
I refuse to practice censorship when it comes to the topics discussed. And believe me, there are some trying to force that right now. So if you want to discuss the Song Girls, football or anything else, feel free to do so. Just try to keep it constructive.

In Mr. Wolf’s defense, he has kept it constructive, and positive…about Oregon’s cheerleaders! And that seems to have taken on a life of its own, as well.

Here’s a sampling of comments from a USC fans demonstrating their addiction to the topic of the “Song Girls” and admiration for the Oregon cheerleaders:

“Yay! Always a happy day with the great Oregon cheerleaders. I was getting withdrawal symptoms from the two days or so without anything from our good friends up north.”

“Whatever they’re doing up there in Oregon these days, we really need to start copying with the Song Girls, because the gap between the two is growing larger and larger every year. I am definitely giving the Oregon cheerleaders a standing ovation when they enter the Coliseum this fall.”

“Fabulous! Best cheerleaders in the country.”

“Peter, I’m going to need that TPS report…and this poster of the Oregon Cheerleaders.”

And here is a sampling of Mr. Wolf’s blog entries over the last couple of weeks touching on this topic:

[Update: Again, this topic of discussion dominates the comments today at Inside USC.]

These entries just represent the last couple of weeks because this discussion has been going on for a while.

Um…you’re cheering for the wrong team.

Somehow, I feel like Duck fans feel USC fan’s pain.

But I think the appeal is different.

Because I’m not expecting to see this headline on a Trojan website any time soon.

“Register-Guard, Oregon Blogger Obsessed With USC’s Marching Band”

Worst. Marching. Band. Uniforms. Ever.

Oregon’s cheerleaders & marching band for USC’s “Song Girls” & marching band?

Hmmm…I think we’re good.

going thru all of that, and reading their comments/questions/etc.. its hilarious.

the song girls they show on tv aren’t that bad.. but i guess thats only one or two of em..

we have had the hottest cheerleaders by far since the harrington days.. thats when i first started to notice how pretty much all of them are in shape and hot.

there are exceptions.. like one girl who was a good dancer, and had a really bomb sister on the team.. the girl was not attractive, and overweight. i kno her name, but i don’t really want to put her on blast like that.. lol.

    jdoggg -

Thanks for not blasting that cheerleader publicly on this blog. I’m sure she appreciates it. And I know we do, too.

Is it really surprising that fans from the University of Watts, steeped in the empty, superficial culture of LA, would obsess about the comparative beauty of their cheerleaders? Should we be at all concerned that the champions of envy for the wrong things are now drooling over what we have?

For years, USC was the trophy-wife standard of college rally squads. Classically timeless, perfectly composed and statuesque, they always seemed more elegant, more sophisticated, more overtly womanly in a Hollywood sort of way. They cut an entirely different glamorous image than our sweet tumbling girls next door.

What should it matter to us if some of USC’s most jaded are grumbling that their Song Girls are a bit lumpier than the thoroughbreds of yesteryear? I don’t give a rat’s rump. They live in a land of beautiful wretched excess; where thousands of pretty new arrivals are daily drawn to the siren song of Tinseltown and the fickle validation it sometimes bestows on the chosen few selected most beautiful.

As one U of Spoiled Children alum arrogantly stated: “Who cares, we’ve all got hot wives.” Indeed, LA has been draining the heartland of its pulchritude for decades.

But if that’s not enough, maybe they can cheer themselves with the new series Comcast is doing on the Cheerleaders of Oregon. George Foster Peabody would be proud.

Can you imagine those Duck cheerleaders at a UO Wrestling match?

Talk about a mix of Testosterone - Brains - and Beauty. Ya gotta love it!

Back in the early 1990s, the duckers already had some of the hottest cheerleaders in the country. My niece was on that squad, and I had to go to a motherducker game because of a lost bet with her. I did get an invitation to spend the pregame with the ducker cheerleaders, and I anxiously awaited that part of the day. It ended up being about the 2 longest hours of my life, as I was constantly hearing them gripe about their boob size or their boyfriend screwing their best friend or … They were the dumbest group of females that I have ever been around–except my niece, of course who is a genius except for her decision to become a ducker.

I will concede that the cheerleaders for both Oregon and UCLA are much hotter than the current crop of USC’s Song Girls.

It’s not that our Song Girls are ugly, it’s just that they aren’t quite as hot as they were about 3 years ago. In 2005 and 06, the girls were smokin, but this year the quality of their looks has decreased. That said, there are still a couple of hotties on the squad.

I think some trojan fans are being a bit to critical and perhaps have a selective memory when it comes to past squads… they weren’t all hot back then.

I think that the USC cheerleading uniforms are 1950’s. Especially in the second row. The UO cheerleaders are also showing more skin.
