Who Will Be The Next Duck In The Pro Football Hall Of Fame?

August 3rd, 2008

By Jay Jones, August 3, 2008

Yesterday, former University of Oregon football player Gary Zimmerman became the sixth Duck induckted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

The other Ducks in the Hall of Fame include:

Dan Fouts

Alphonse (Tuffy) Leemans

Mel Renfro

Norm Van Brocklin

Dave Wilcox

Now, only three schools have more members of the Hall of Fame than Oregon. And those schools are:

Southern California -11
Notre Dame – 10
Michigan – 7

Alabama – 6
Illinois – 6
Minnesota – 6
Ohio State – 6
Oregon – 6
Syracuse – 6
Penn State – 5
Southern Methodist – 5

That got me to thinking: who’s going to be the next Duck to make it to Canton?

According to Pro-Football Reference.com, Oregon has had 171 former players play in the NFL, with 18 currently active.

Josh Bidwell, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, P
Kellen Clemens, New York Jets, QB
Cameron Colvin, San Francisco 49ers, WR
Dennis Dixon, Pittsburgh Steelers, QB
Reuben Droughns, New York Giants, RB
A.J. Feeley, Philadelphia Eagles, QB
Joey Harrington, Atlanta Falcons, QB
Jordan Kent, Seattle Seahawks, WR
Keith Lewis, San Francisco 49ers, FS
Enoka Lucas, Tennessee Titans, C
Wesly Mallard, Seattle Seahawks, LB
Marcus Maxwell, Cincinnati Bengals, WR
Maurice Morris, Seattle Seahawks, RB
Haloti Ngata, Baltimore Ravens, DT
Igor Olshansky, San Diego Chargers, DE
Samie Parker, Denver Broncos, WR
Justin Peelle, Miami Dolphin, TE
Dante Rosario, Carolina Panthers, TE
Geoff Schwartz, Carolina Panthers, OL
Junior Siavii, Dallas Cowboys, DT
Adam Snyder, San Francisco 49ers, T
Jonathan Stewart, Carolina Panthers, RB
Matt Toeaina, Chicago Bears, DT
Anthony Trucks, Pittsburgh Steelers, LB
Demetrius Williams, Baltimore Ravens, WR
George Wrighster, Jacksonville Jaguars, TE

From that list, who do you think will be Oregon’s next member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

Or is there one?

Could the next Duck enshrined come from the Senior Selection committee? Are 46 touchdowns good enough for Ahmad Rashad (Bobby Moore)? Will 201 games get George Martin in there?

Josh Bidwell is a friend and a Pro Bowl punter. But there’s only one kicker in the Hall, and no punters.

Duck fans, who would you guess has the best shot to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

Or is the next Oregon player to be inducted not even on campus yet?

Haloti is the one that jumped out at me.

J.Stew as the #2 and one of Clemens/Dixon as a longshot.

Haloti does jump out. But I think it’s going to be a long time before we see another Duck in the HoF.

The only one left with a shred of a chance is Ahmad Rashad, and he was a far better collegiate player than he ever was in the NFL…Decent career, but certainly NOT hall of fame worthy if not for his public image. Statistically Lynn Swan shouldn’t be in the hall, but his public image helped immensely to sway voters. A similar path is Ahmad’s only shot. And I don’t see it happening, which means we won’t see another Duck in the hall of fame for a very, very long time…if ever.
