Mark, a DSN visitor, sent us a series of questions this morning regarding the Ducks games on TV.
Well, I distilled his questions down to one: if an Oregon football game is said to be on OSN, where can I find it?
So, I forwarded Mark’s questions to Oregon’s Joe Giansante, expecting to get an answer tomorrow. Even though it’s Labor Day, it turns out Joe is hard at work today (One quick note: people have said a lot of things about Joe, but no one has ever accused him of not working hard at whatever he’s done.) And he shot an answer back to me pretty quickly.
Unfortunately, some of the answers might be frustrating and discouraging for Duck fans.
Here are Joe’s answers to the basic question as to where Duck fans can find OSN games around the state:
Portland - Comcast SportsNet 37
Eugene/Springfield - KLSR
Roseburg - KLSR
Coos Bay - KLSR
Bend - No carrier. Need an agreement between Bend Cable and Comcast SportsNet.
Medford - No carrier. Need an agreement between Charter and Comcast SportsNet.
Ashland, Coquille, Myrtle Point - Mixed coverage.
Duck fans, here comes some potentially frustrating developments in the broadcast situation:
- All of this is a work-in-progress. Look for the broadcast situation to be worked out by mid-October.
- Charter just picked up the Big Ten Network, but not Comcast SportsNet.
- Pac-10 just informed the University of Oregon that they will not be able to distribute their live games on ESPN GamePlan at FSN’s request. FSN does not own the broadcast rights, but can prevent the broadcasting of live game institutional telecasts.
Duck fans, broadcast deals are complicated issues. But I understand you have some very basic, simple questions you would like answered. And we’re trying to get you those answers. So, we’d like to thank Joe for getting us a quick follow-up on these questions for us.
One last note regarding the University of Oregon and its broadcast deals: it’s in their best interest to have as many Duck fans as possible watching Duck games and programming. But…some of these broadcast entities don’t always believe that it’s in their best interests to accommodate the University of Oregon.
Mark, thanks for the questions.

Another example of how the Fox Sport deal is a bad one. Now they are actively attempting to harm a Pac-10 conference school.
Am I think only one who thinks that action is petty and mean-spirited?
I will second the call for contact information for Fox Sports.
Counting the days until Tom Hansen leaves us.

As a subscriber of GamePlan I find it pariculary disturbing that the PAC-10 and its buffoon president Hansen have agreed to give FSN a veto over any other entity carrying Oregon games that FSN will not carry. Given FSN’s hostility to and bias against Oregon I find this particularly offensive. To me, it also raises potential legal issues with respect to anti-trust laws and or restraint of free trade.
Oregon need to make its own media deals, and screw the PAC-10 and FSN.

Phil & Johnny -
“Johnny” on Rob’s blog at the Register-Guard posted contact info for FSN.
No ESPN Gameplan this week
But, remember, Liberty Media now owns both Comcast and FSN.
Kind of a weird deal.

Online is the way of the future, especially for those fans living overseas or at least out of the Northwest… The O-Zone’s quality stream of the ASU game was awesome! I’ve been able to find un-official streams of games, but they’re always subject to some nice volunteer.
Any future TV deal should have an ability to stream the same feed through the O-Zone, this would only help the TV provider with more exposure anyway (as well as generate more $$$ for the university).
The longer the traditional media sources fight the progress of technology the more they will lose out on the future profits…

How did FSN get that in their deal? Seems clearly like retaliation for UO joining with CSN.
Good riddance Tom Hansen.

Please tell me how I am supposed to watch the Ducks play now? What gives FSN the right to block games televised on ESPN? What genius at the Pac-10 media divison okayed such a worthless rule allowing a network that is NOT even showing this weeks game to come in and shoot down the opportunity for others to broadcast it. If FSN really cares that much then they need to carry ALL Duck games. If not, then they should stop screwing it up for everyone else.

This media thing is out of hand. The blame is put on the other media outlets for not accepting OSN with open arms but there is a lot of information about unreasonable fees demanded by OSN for broadcast rights. FSN who is owned by the same company than owns Comcast blocks Oregon from ESPN game plan. This is the first time I have not been able to watch the Coach on Sunday since the program started. We do not have Comcast where I live.
The only folks that come up short in all this is the common average fan.
It truely sucks and all we get is spin!

Can the University of Oregon petition the Pac-10 to allow ESPN GamePlan to show the game?
I could see a compromise where the game time would be moved so that it doesn’t conflict with the BYU vs. Washington telecast and ESPN pays Fox Sports for the rights to show the game.
Bottom line, the Pac-10 TV deal sucks and hopefully the new commish. can do something about it.

Fwiw….Comcast and FSN are not owned by the same outfit….

Let’s recap what has happened in the past few weeks:
- Oregon signs deal with IMG to get millions of dollars towards new stadium/arena, etc.
- IMG turns around and tells a loyal and local television group to the university to basically “pound salt” because the big bad Comcast is going to give them TONS of money
- IMG and Oregon sign the deal and now cry about how big bad Comcast doesn’t have the rights to broadcast the games whenever they want, wherever they want, etc.
This whole saga has been caused by Joe Giansante who for some reason thinks that he has the right to pop off with quotes like:
I’d give up “8,000 residents in Medford for 50,000 in Seattle.”
And now this “local” network that you have agreed to put your broadcasts on for the next five years has decided to not be so “local” and expand into Seattle, and across the Northwest. It is like FSN all over again…and how happy will you be when not only can you not get a game on ESPN Gameplan, but instead of getting a Ducks game on TV, you end up with a Eastern Washington or a Tacoma Rainiers game on instead.
THIS is what you are in for as this growing network scrambles to find a way to not be so “local.”

I just received an Email from Directv and they said and I quote “Thanks for taking the time to write us. As you know, we don’t carry Comcast Sports Northwest right now and we don’t currently have plans to add it to our lineup.
However, I see that your request had already been forwarded to DIRECTV Management, so I didn’t take any further action.
In addition, whenever we add channels to our lineup, we release a statement to the press, so keep an eye on the news to find out about the newest channels or visit our website at directv.com/pr.
Thanks again for writing.

I’d give up “8,000 residents in Medford for 50,000 in Seattle.I thought Joe G.hated Washington. I guess when it comes to the almighty dollar people can change!!!I am sick and tired of hearing how hard OSN is working on this coverage deal when they turn around and make US the ones outside the coverage area do all the work of calling writing letters to cable and satellite providers and tell them that they now need to give a rats ass about Oregon sports! So now the ones left out in the cold have to listen to the radio broadcast via O-zone which would normally be fine with Jerry Allen, but he is just as excited about the new programming on Comcast.I don’t know how many times he mentioned the new look of the coaches show!!!But were left out!!BS
ONE PISSED OFF DUCK FAN!!!
