Good-Bye Dixon, Hello Costa…Err, Roper…Err, Harper…Err, Who?

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

With Dennis Dixon using up all his eligibility as an Oregon Duck, the coaching staff headed into Spring trying to find a new quarterback, in what might be the most interesting battle for the starting quarterback spot ever in the history of Oregon football.

That task just got even tougher now as the Ducks added another addition to the race in JC transfer Jeremiah Mosali, who will have 3 years to play when he arrives to Eugene this summer. Mosali brings experience in the spread option and Madden-like stats from his freshman season at CC of San Francisco, where he threw for 3600 yards, ran for another 400, and a combined for 41 touchdowns through the air and rushing.

So who starts?

How about the QB’s do the Truffle Shuffle like in Goonies to see who starts?

Is it Costa, the player the coaching staff said would have slided right in at QB when Dixon went down with his injury and kept the offense flowing?

Or Roper, the season saving QB who lead the Ducks to a Sun Bowl win in a blowout fashion?

What about one of the two freshman QBs in Harper or Thomas? Both bring athleticism to the QB spot and look to be the future QBs of college football. Big. Quick. Athletic.

Don’t forget Cooper. Remember, he was a top JC QB two years ago and the starting BYU QB last summer before an injury.

There is also the home grown Oregon boy in Kempt, who started the last two games of the regular season, as well.

Now you can add in the most recent addition in Mosali who is the Spread King it appears from his JC stats as a FRESHMAN!

Is it a problem to have 7 (Yes, 7!) quarterbacks on the roster? I think it is, and it is starting to sound like the coaching staff does, too.

We now have two different instances where Bellotti has indirectly made it sound like two guys will need to find a different position on this team.

The first came last Saturday during the Spring game when Joe Giansante asked him about the depth at QB and Belloti said they will trim the roster down to five spots. Which means two players will need to move.

Today on 1320 AM “The Score”, Bellotti was on “Sports Talk with Steve Tannen” and reiterated the fact that the staff would like five players on the depth chart and there are currently seven players listed at quarterback.

So who moves? Thoughts?

Very Curious…Spring Game Attendance Numbers

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Jay from Duck Sports News, here.

Sometime in the second half of Oregon’s Spring Game, I heard Don Essig give the the official attendance.

14,107.

I really didn’t think about it that much. But I looked around Autzen and thought that number seemed reasonable based on the number of sections that were full. Pretty precise. But reasonable.

After the game, a friend asked me, “How many people were at the Spring Game?”

“Around 15,000,” I replied. I rounded up.

“How do you know? Were they selling tickets? Were there people counting at the gates?” he fired back.

I didn’t know. But I knew 14,107 seemed reasonable.

I guess I’m not the only one who rounded up.

Raise your hand if you know the answers.

How seasons has Coach Bellotti been at Oregon?

14.

How many wins does Coach Bellotti have?

107.

Bam. 14,107. Take a look for yourself.

Coincidence? I think not.

Well, everything else about the Spring Game was made up, why not the official attendance?

In case you’re curious, this little tip was forwarded to us.

And if you’re curious about the attendance at other Spring Games across the country, here you go. These numbers come by way of Bob Condotta at the Seattle-Times and Dave Plati at Colorado.

Politically Incorrect U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials Sensitivity Training Video

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Jay, here.

Almost a month ago, FOX News aired a story on a University of Oregon program to provide sensitivity training for Eugene residents in anticipation of the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials.

Take a look.

Politically incorrect? Overly sensitive?

Well, if you’re overly sensitive about politically incorrect parodies (spoofs seem to be in vogue right now), you might want to stear clear of this suggested sensitivity training video. What’s a parody? It’s a work that mocks an original piece of work. But that’s not important right now.

If you thought Barbara Billingsley talking jive in “Airplane!” was funny, check this out.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop watching online spoofs.

UO-ASU Game on FSN NW

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Duck Sports News has learned that the Oregon-Arizona State game will be on Fox Sports Northwest with Fox Sports Arizona commentators.

The Oregon State game will be on ABC.

[UPDATE 5:38 p.m.]

Here is the press release from KEZI explaining the broadcasting situation.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KEZI 9 WILL NOT TELEVISE THE ARIZONA STATE VS. UNIVERSITY OF OREGON FOOTBALL GAME

KEZI 9 WILL AIR THE OSU vs. USC GAME LIVE

(Eugene, OR – October 30, 2007) KEZI 9 will not carry the Arizona State University vs. University of Oregon football game on Saturday, November 3, 2007 as originally announced due to a loss of local exclusive television rights, station officials just announced.

KEZI 9 had earlier announced they would be carrying the Oregon Sports Network production of the ASU vs. Oregon football game at 3:30 p.m., adjusting normal ABC programming is order to carry this OSN telecast exclusively in its markets. KEZI 9 has been informed by the University of Oregon that Fox Sports Northwest has exercised its right with the Pac-10 Conference to televise the Fox Sports Arizona production of the ASU vs. UO game in the state of Oregon, the Pac-10 Conference has confirmed.

Due to Fox Sports Northwest exercising its right to televise the game in local markets, the University of Oregon cannot offer KEZI 9 market exclusivity for the game, which is a requirement for an OSN telecast. Therefore, KEZI 9 will not televise the ASU vs. UO game.

“It is very unfortunate we will not be able to carry the Duck game live this weekend,” said Mark Hatfield, KEZI 9 General Manager. “As the Oregon Sports Network affiliate, and the home of the Ducks, we always look for a way to bring the Oregon games to the thousands of Duck college football fans in our viewing area. Unfortunately, we’re not able to do that this week.”

KEZI 9 will instead provide coverage of the OSU vs. USC game that is scheduled to air live on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

“We recognize the significance of this game to our viewers and are extremely pleased we can provide Beaver fans in our coverage area a chance to see the OSU vs. USC game,” said Hatfield.
