This morning on The Writer’s Block on ESPN Radio 1320 “The Score”, The Register-Guard’s Rob Moseley and I talked to Inside USC’s Scott Wolf about this brahaha of a controversy (starts at around 18:00).

We also talked about the Eugene City Council’s decision to delay on action on vacating the Villard Street Alley property for the new basketball arena (right off the top).

And we talked some magic tricks that make things disappear: a pencil in The Dark Knight, an FCC fine for the “wardrobe malfunction”, sexual assault charges at Iowa, and a prison sentence.

The apocalypse is upon us!

On Tuesday morning, I will be hosting The Writer’s Block at 9:00am on 1320-AM in the Eugene-Springfield area with The Register-Guard’s Rob Moseley, while George Schroeder is on assignment. You can also hear a rebroadcast on 590-AM at 6:00pm.

Here are a couple of things Rob and I are going to talk about tomorrow:

- Scott Wolf from The Daily News and the Inside USC blog is going to join us to talk USC & Oregon cheerleaders, O.J. Mayo, Reggie Bush, and Pete Carroll.

- The ACC has made a policy move that some consider to be friendly to gambling.

- Monday night, the Eugene City Council looked at the issue of the new UO basketball arena and the possible stumbling block of the Villard Street alley.

Even if you haven’t, inquiring Oregon fans want to know. So, they’ve asked award-winning Register-Guard columnist Bob Welch. And since 2000, he’s been answering local trivia questions every month. But just because his column is in the City/Region section, don’t let that fool you. Bob might not be the Register-Guard’s sports columnist (or a former member of Fleetwood Mac or a former Cy Young Awarding-winning pitcher), but he’s definitely the go-to guy at the Register-Guards for Oregon sports-related trivia.

As of yesterday, all 99 of Bob’s monthly Q&A columns are now available online. After his column on Tuesday, that number will be 100.

More than just local civic trivia questions, Bob’s answered quite a few questions of interest to Duck fans.

Want to know what that sound is after the Ducks score at Autzen? Or why it took a while to see those yellow and white football helmets? Or was that really a UO football game on TV in “Head of State”?

Oh, wait. Somebody already has.

The opener against the Huskies? At Purdue? At USC? At Oregon State?

There’s quite a few ‘tough’ games on Oregon’s 2008 schedule, but which one is the most important? Which one could make or break the season?

I would have to say the first one, at home against the Huskies. If the Ducks were to lose that game, not only is it an unexpected ‘L’ in the loss column, it could dash the confidence of whoever starts at QB. It could also begin to turn the Huskies’ ship around and get Washington’s head coach, Tyrone Willingham one step closer to saving his job.

If you had to choose just ONE game that you felt was most important for the Ducks in 2008, which game would it be and why?

Just want to remind all Duck fans that the SW Washington chapter of the Duck Club is in the early stages of forming.

We had our first inital meeting on July 11th with nine Duck fans attendance.

Now I would like to I invite all Duck fans in the Vancouver/SW Washington area to jump on board! You don’t have to have attended Oregon, or have season tickets to any Oregon sports, to be a member.

We are inviting all fans to meet at Big Al’s for the next meeting on Thursday, Aug 7th at 7pm. Then, we will meet again on Aug 28th.

Come out and meet your fellow Ducks and talk about the upcoming football season! These meeting are pretty informal, just a few Quackerbackers getting together.

The long range goals of the new chapter are as follows:

1. Build our membership to 35-50 supporters, or more.

2. Build a web-page.

3. Recruit some club sponsors.

4. Work to be able to fund a full or partial athletic scholarship to the U of O from the SW Washington area.

5. Bring SW Washington fans closer to the University of Oregon and University of Oregon Athletics.

6. Gain official 501(c)3 non-profit status.

This is a great way to show your Duck pride and stick to the Huskies and Cougars in SW Washington!

So, jump on board and GO DUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a chance over the weekend to browse through Phil Steele’s 2008 College Football Preview. It’s an amazing magazine - not easy to look at for the graphic designer in me, but tons and tons of information.

Here are a few things I pulled out about the Ducks.

TOP INDIVIDUAL UNITS:
This is his rating of a teams’ individual units. The Duck’s units that were listed in his top 25 are below:

Running Backs: #24

Receivers: #20

Offensive Line: #13
Steele’s Comments: A mobile QB like Dennis Dixon helps the O-line stats and with untested QBs in two late games they allowed 9 of the teams 24 sacks. The RB’s avg 5.6 ypc rush. This year they have 3 starters back from one of the Pac-10’s top O-lines.

Defensive Line: #13
Steele’s Comments: The Ducks were decent up front last year allowing 3.6 ypc rush and will be stronger in ‘08. They do lose two starters but have good size in the middle and add two top notch JUCOs there. On the outside, Nick Reed had 12 sacks and 10.5 tfl and Will Tukuafu had 4.5 sacks in his first year and will be stronger. Kenny Rowe (PS#19) was a backup as a true frosh.

Defensive Backs: #1
Steele’s Comments: The Oregon Ducks have had 4 straight top 20 finishes in my Pass D rankings (see below), including last year when they were #8, snagging 20 interceptions. Their excellent CB combo of Walter Thurmond III and Jairus Byrd both return and they combined for 12 int and 33 pbu last year, while 1st Team Pac-10 ROV Patrick Chung led the team in tackles.

EXPERIENCE RATINGS
Here’s how Phil breaks down how experienced a team is: 3 Points for every SR starter, 2.5 for additional SRs in two-deep, 2 for every JR starter, 1.5 for JRs in two-deep, 1 for SOPH starters, .5 for soph in two deep. Subtracted 1 for every FR starter, -.5 for every freshman in two-deep.

Obviously, by Phil’s ratings, Oregon State has the most experienced team going into 2008. If experience is as important as they say, the Huskies could be in trouble this year.

2007 PASS EFFICIENCY DEFENSE
Here’s how the Ducks (and a few notable Pac-10 teams) finished last year in Phil’s Pass Efficiency Defense Ratings.

Arizona St #5
USC #6
Oregon #8
Oregon State #10

Here is Phil’s comment: …Oregon was very similar in that they ranked #86 in the NCAA Pass D rankings allowing 249 ypg. My ratings had them ranked #8 as they took on mostly pass happy offenses of the Pac-10 and allowed just 53% completions with a 20-20 ratio. The Ducks took on two Top 10 offenses which average a combined 314 ypg and held them to just 48% completions. They also won 7 games by 21 or more so gave us some meaningless garbage yards late which I factor

2008 SURPRISE TEAMS: Oregon #10

On his website, Phil has Oregon is #10 on his list of surprise teams in 2008 (California is #9).

Phil describes these as the ‘teams not ranked in the top 10 that have the best shot at the title game.‘ He had the Ducks in this same spot last year as well.

This morning, Kenny & Katy talked to former University of Oregon wrestling coach Ron Finley regarding the current litigation on The Morning Sports Page with Kenny & Katy on 95.5 FM “The Game” in Portland.

In the course of their conversation, Mr. Finley acknowledges the University of Oregon’s right to drop a program.  However, he asserts the problem is with how the University of Oregon dropped the program.
