Now that Jeremiah Masoli and…uh…that other guy doesn’t matter…has been charged in connection with a January theft at a fraternity house…

And…

LaMichael James is reportedly changing his plea on domestic abuse charges…

DSN: What’s the name of “The Duck”?!

March 9th, 2010 | 14 Comments »

NCAA Football: Southern California at Oregon

By Jay Jones
One Click Sports News

The stress of promoting another fine performance by Nicolas Cage was simply too much for The Walt Disney Corp.

They had to give up something in order to put their full support behind the upcoming “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”.

And control over the Duck was that something.

Now that the University of Oregon has control over use of the costumed athletic mascot, what should “The Duck” be called?

Some fans have mistakenly called him ” Donald”.

Some students have insipidly called him “Puddles”.

I prefer just calling him…The Duck (like there’s any other duck).

But that probably won’t do.

So…what’s the name of “The Duck”?

If “The Duck” isn’t much of a name, what about “Baxter the Quackster”, as a tribute to Ted Knight (no relation)?

Uh…no.

What do you think?

Will these results get forwarded to the athletic department?

Absolutely not.

First, the University of Oregon Athletic Department monitors Duck Sports News on a daily basis.

Second, given the University of Oregon Athletic Department’s concern for the recent extracurricular activities by various football players, they don’t have much time to devote to naming “The Duck”.

Finally…asking Oregon fans to participate in the identity of the newly liberated Duck?

Nah.

If an idea does not originate from within the wall of the Casanova Center, it does not qualify as an idea.

This is too much stress.

“Blazing Saddles” is on.

I’m out of here.

DSN: Oregon’s Pro Football Workout Days

March 9th, 2010 | Comments Off

Oregon State v Oregon

This just in from sports information at the University of Oregon…

The dates for former University of Oregon football players to workout for NFL scouts are scheduled for (Thursday) March 11 and March 18. Activities are expected to get underway each day about 1 p.m. in the Casanova Center weight room, and will proceed to the Moshofsky Center anywhere between 1:30 – 2 p.m.

These workouts are closed to the general public. Because of the space limitations in the Oregon weight room, only the drills held in the Moshofsky Center will be accessible to accredited news media.

The email also came with this disclaimer…

We will have no knowledge of which former Oregon players or team representatives will be in attendance in advance of either workout.

Since we are not accredited news media, we will not be in attendance. But if we still had a sports talk radio show, we would be accredited news media.

And wouldn’t now be a great time to have sports talk radio show?

Probably.

DSN: Tracking coaching candidates on Twitter

March 9th, 2010 | 2 Comments »

Sports - February 20, 2006

By Jay Jones
One Click Sports News

Now that the University of Oregon Athletic Department’s most recent worst kept secret is public (even though Athletic Director Mike Bellotti and soon-to-be-former men’s basketball head coach Ernie Kent are still “talking” – working out the details of his firing), it’s time to start tracking who’s going to be Oregon’s next head coach.

Here is a list of candidates:

• Mark Few, Gonzaga
• Tubby Smith, Minnesota
• Jamie Dixon, Pittsburgh
• Mark Turgeon, Texas A&M
• Steve Alford, New Mexico
• Randy Bennett, St. Mary’s
• Brad Stevens, Butler
• Ben Jacobsen, Northern Iowa
• P.J. Carlesimo, Latrell Sprewell’s hands

And I’m tossing this one in…just because I can…

• Mike Dunleavy, Sr., Clippers

And…keep an eye on this name…not in terms of coaching…but influence…

William Wesley, a.k.a “Worldwide Wes”

But here’s what needs to be understood about Oregon’s next head coach: he’s going to be a Nike guy.

For example, assistant coach/recruiting specialist Kenny Payne is expected to be retained.

Nike guy.

Although, Mike Dunlap was supposedly a Nike guy, and that didn’t work out real well.

Deepthroat (William Mark Felt, Sr.) advised Woodward and Bernstein to “follow the money”.

In Oregon’s case, follow Nike’s money.

If ever Nike, and Phil Knight, is going to exert its influence at the University of Oregon, it’s going to be naming the men’s basketball coach who will be coaching in Matthew Knight Arena.

Here’s what’s being said on Twitter about these possible candidates…

(These are general searches on Twitter. So the specific results will vary.)

In case you missed it: Craigslist post – Babysitter for Oregon Ducks Football Players

March 8th, 2010 | No Comments »

By Jay Jones
One Click Sports News

In case you missed it (before it was flagged for removal), here is a screenshot of a most curious listing that appeared yesterday on Craigslist…

Considering Oregon’s series of ongoing legal issues, this is mildly clever. Even the most ardent athletic supporter sniffers out there have to admit that it’s kind of funny.

Speaking of legal issues (or non-issues, as the case is not), keep an eye on all Oregon Taxi vehicles. We think that the mysterious “Jeremiah Masoli at Taylor’s” surveillance tape is never in any one location for too long, and is in constant transit in an Oregon Taxi.

So that next Oregon Taxi you see, just might be the one transporting the Holy Grail for Oregon’s next crusade.

Or it could be just another taxi.

Stay tuned for the next Craigslist post listing – probably under “community” and “lost+found”.

His numbers are more impressive in Pac-10 play as he posted 16.2 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game. PAC-10 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

TARVER was key in leading the Beaver defense, allowing 61.1 points per game (3rd in the Pac-10) overall, and 60.4 ppg (2nd in Pac-10) in Pac-10 play. VUCEVIC led the Pac-10 in rebounding (9.4 rpg) and posted 10 double-doubles this season. PAC-10 COACH OF THE YEAR

SENDEK, 47, has guided ARIZONA STATE to a second-place finish in the Pac-10 race with a 12-6 league mark, 22-9 record overall. The second-place finish matches Arizona State’s best showing in Pac-10 play since the 1980-81 squad finished second with a 16-2 record. Despite losing two NBA draft picks (James Harden and Jeff Pendergraph) and picked to finish seventh in the Pac-10 race in a preseason poll of the media, Sendek led the Sun Devils to their third consecutive 20-win season. Collecting his first Pac-10 Coach of the Year honor, he now has earned Coach of the Year honors in three different leagues – Mid-American, Atlantic Coast and Pac-10. Only one other Arizona State coach has received Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors – Ned Wulk (1980). Sendek has a career record of 330-212 (.609), while his Arizona State record stands at 76-54 (.585).

THE VOTE: Coach of the Year, All-Conference, All-Freshman, All-Defensive teams and Most Improved Player are voted on by the coaches. Coaches are not permitted to vote for themselves or their own players for the honors.
