Ramos Situation A Lose-Lose All The Way Around

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

By Matt Prehm, June 18, 2008
Special to Duck Sports News

Over the past few years football recruiting has grown in popularity to the point that websites such as Rivals.com and Scout.com have become million dollar industries, helping football fanatics get through the large portion of the year that football is not played.

Fans are becoming more and more concerned with winning the “second season” of football, recruiting season. Coaching staffs across America are trying to land as many top flight recruits as possible, but also have to now deal with recruiting websites’ rankings and their school’s fan’s opinions of whether they are bringing in good talent.

Some coaches have been hard-core recruiters who tend to never sleep and are out recruiting nonstop. Pete Carroll at USC and Nick Saban at Alabama come to mind when you think of coaches who bend the rules as far as they can to snag that next top recruit.

Then there’s coaching staffs like Mike Bellotti’s at Oregon, who don’t obviously try to find loop holes into any rule they can think of such as taking part in the “bump” recruiting tactic in which the coach might “conveniently” bump into a star recruit at his high school while visiting a high school coach.

Before the news out of the L.A. Times involving the Oregon staff pulling a scholarship offer for committed safety/linebacker Xavier Ramos, the Ducks were considered respectable. Oregon’s football staff had been known as a school that followed the rules and were considered to be a very respectful staff by recruits and their families.

The recent comments from Xavier Ramos’ head coach, Todd Therrien at St. Bonaventure, regarding the Oregon staff has created a large cause of concern. Therrien is so furious with Oregon assistant Coach Steve Greatwood that he said Ducks representatives will no longer be welcome on campus. “I don’t want to see anyone from Oregon,” he said Monday.

With that news coming out of the L.A. Times, Oregon Coach Mike Bellotti was granted permission from the NCAA to release a statement on the matter.

Bellotti claimed the fault lay in a communication breakdown by the coaches. They simply accepted commitments from two players when only one scholarship was available at the position.

It is standard practice when a staff fills up a position of need to inform all other recruits that had been offered that scholarship their offer isn’t available anymore. However, rarely does this happen when two kids looking for the same spot commit around the same time. Even more scarce is the fact it happened this early in the recruiting process.

It’s a lose-lose situation for all parties involved in my eyes, as the Duck Staff now seems to have a black eye when it comes to recruiting even if it was a simple breakdown in communication between the coaches and the recruits. Ramos seemed set on a school and was going to get a free education but now must find a new opportunity.

However, the actions taken by Ramos’ head coach are raising eyebrows. Why go out and slam the Oregon program like this? It’s still very early in the recruiting process and there is plenty of time for Ramos to find another school that will offer him a scholarship.

The situation of another St. Bonaventure player from last year’s class who did not qualify to play at Tulsa also raises some concern. It is strange there have been miscommunication issues regarding players’ loss of scholarship with Therrien in the last two months.

Lastly, why does a school have to stick with an offer this early in the recruiting process?

Is it fair to schools that have commitments from players who then learn the player decided to go elsewhere a few months later? Why should a school keep its scholarships tied up to one player when that same player can leave the school out to dry a few months later? This situation goes both ways.

I bet we don’t know the entire story on this situation yet and until then I will continue my support for the coaches and the Duck staff. Their track record over the past decade outshines this one unfortunate incident.

There can be no doubt, though: things will be interesting as this story unfolds.

Recruiting Map: Update and Thoughts

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Well its that day of the week for you recruiting junkies! Update Friday!

The Ducks have a four new offers dished out as reported on Scout.com and Rivals.com since the last update last Friday.

The new guys are:

1. Adam Hall

4* WR from Tucson, AZ( Palo Verde Magnet High School).

Hall is 6′4 195 pounds and runs a 4.56 forty-yard dash. Hall has offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Colorado State, Oregon, Oregon State, Utah, and Washington State.

2. Boseko Lokombo

1* LB/RB/WR from Eugene, Oregon (South Eugene High School)

Lokombo is 6′3 220 pounds and is being recruited as an athlete you could say. He plays all over the place at South Eugene high school. Originally from Congo before moving to Canada and then to Eugene.

3. Jeremiah Masoli

1* QB from San Francisco, CA ( CC of San Francisco)

Masoli( 6′ 205 pounds) is the top QB in the Junior College ranks for the class of 2009. Masoli is in such a big hurry to get to Oregon that he decided to forgo his Sophomore season and transfer to Oregon now. He has signed a Financial Aid Agreement with the UO and will report to camp in June and count as a 2008 recruit. Masoli threw for 3600 yards and over 30 touchdowns as a freshman while also adding 400 yards and 11 more touchdowns via the running game while playing in a spread offense in JC football.

Masoli committed to Oregon Thursday(5/1) morning.

4. Kerry Lewis

1* DB from Lancaster, TX (Lancaster High School)

Lewis, a 5′9 176 pound hard hitting defensive back got his second offer of the year this week from Oregon and now holds two offers with the other being Iowa.

When I was doing this I was really interested in how many offers the coaching staff has extended out to kids who are playing their prep football within the state of Oregon.

I can’t recall a time when Oregon has offered four recruits this early in the recruiting process and yet there’s still a few more players in the state that could land an offer if Oregon miss on a top target.

In the past 15 years or so the Oregon football team has always had a player here or a few there that starred for the Ducks and were from Oregon as well. It brought a sense of connection to many fans as they saw or knew these kids grow up.

Now, I as a fan I want the best players Oregon can nab as possible and I don’t care where they came from. However, when Oregon does offer someone from the state I am really excited about him maybe staying in Oregon and play his college football.

Also, check out how many kids Oregon is recruiting from the state of Texas. We hit Texas pretty hard last season considering we had no real history in that area before than. Now we are building on that momentum from last season. Four offers this early in the game already, and if I had to use my terrible recruiting skills, I would bet we will end up with a number not even close to four by the time recruiting is all said and done.

We are still hitting Southern Cal as usual but like I mentioned in last week’s update, Oregon is moving east at a steady pace and becoming that National program everyone wants Oregon to morph into.

The Final Word On Fred…I Mean…Terrelle Pryor!

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Jay, here.

This is it. The final word on Terrelle Pryor. I promise.

But I was at that press conference yesterday. Despite the video evidence and written accounts to the contrary, I was the only one there. And this is what happened:

JJ: So, Terrelle, where are going to play football?

TP: If everyone’s here…

JJ: Uh…It’s just me, Terrelle.  Everyone lost interest a long time ago. You didn’t sign on National Letter of Intent Day. That was like on February 6th, almost a month and a half ago.  Plus, you said you don’t like the attention.

TP: If everyone’s here…

JJ: Yes, we’re all here. It’s just me! No one else is here. Get on with it! Where are you going to go to school?

TP: University of Ohio State.

JJ: Excuse me?

TP: University of Ohio State.

JJ: University of Ohio State?

TP: University of Ohio State.

JJ: What’s that?

TP: University of Ohio State.

JJ: Haven’t heard of University of Ohio State.  Don’t you mean Ohio State University?

TP: University of Ohio State.

JJ: Yes, Terrelle, I can see the hat and t-shirt. The hat has an “O” on it. If I was color blind, it could be Oregon, for all I know. But your t-shirt says “Ohio State University”. After waiting a month and a half of keeping the collective nation of college football fans hostage, that’s your announcement?

TP: University of Ohio State.

JJ: Yes, Terrelle, I heard it the first time. And I can’t believe you said it a second time. It’s Ohio State University. Actually, it’s “THE” Ohio State University.

TP: I’m not worried about none of that.

JJ: You’re not? You should be. Because every time a former Buckeye introduces himself on Monday Night Football, it’s always “THE” Ohio State University. Every single flippin’ time!

TP: I think the football field will speak for itself. I mean, that’s why you are here, right?

JJ: Terrelle, I’m not here for an announcement from the football field. I’m here for your announcement. And after a month and half of thinking about your decision, you drop a University of Ohio State on me? What?

TP: I didn’t ask to be No. 1 in the country.

JJ: Are you kidding me? You drag this on for over a month and you didn’t ask for this? Really? In all that time, you didn’t pick up on the fact that it’s Ohio State University, or “THE” Ohio State University?

TP: I can learn from a senior.

JJ: Terrelle, you are a Senior. Are you telling me that you didn’t practice at all? Ohio State University. The Ohio State University.  What if you had decided to go to one of the other schools you were considering?  Were you going to practice saying, “I’m a Michigan University Wolverine?”  “An Oregon State Duck”?  “A UPS Nittany Lion”?

TP: You don’t want to go through it.

JJ: All we’re talking about is practice, Fred.

And that’s a true story.

Pryor’s Recruiting Timeline

Friday, February 8th, 2008

For those of you who have been intrigued by the media coverage following the Terrelle Pryor saga, here’s a look at the time line of “headlines” taken from our list at DSN.

There are those who think the media coverage of recruiting is overblown, but as Justin Meyers said on his show yesterday, the media just covers what the public desires to read about. They wouldn’t cover it if no one would read it.

Anyways, here’s a somewhat graphical look at things beginning last June, up until Signing Day.

Rivals Radio: Pryor Denies Monday’s Visit to Oregon

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Mike Farrell on Rivals Radio this morning said he talked with Terrelle Pryor late last night. Pryor denied the reports that a visit to Oregon is scheduled for Monday, January 28. Pryor is apparently trying to take two more visits before signing day February 6, but has to work around his basketball schedule.

Why is Pryor Still Listing Oregon?

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Does anyone else find it odd that the number-one rated high school player, Terrelle Pryor still lists Oregon as one of his college choices? He’s already said he does not have time for a visit to Eugene, and the schools he’s going up against (Ohio State, Florida, Michigan and Penn State) are the best around. Why are the Ducks still on his list?

It was reported late last week that because he was not to make an official visit to Oregon, he had taken them off his list, but after he won the MVP award for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl he insisted that was a mistake and Oregon was still in the mix.

What’s your take? Where do you see Mr. Pryor ending up?

Recruiting: Oregon Back In The Mix For Harper

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

According to several of the Scout.com sites, Chris Harper has decommitted from Kansas State University, after the departure of KSU’s Offensive Coordinator for Maryland, and opened the process up again. That means Oregon, supposedly second on his list, is back in the mix.

Here’s a collection of links regarding this news:
